what does it mean to be vulnerable?

according to the dictionary--
vulnerable:: capable of being physically or emotionally wounded; open to attack, weak.

i have been hurt too many times to remember what it means to be truly vulnerable in my relationships.

i'm guarded.
i'm protective.
i'm in control.

because when one is vulnerable, getting hurt is a strong possibility.

it became 'safe' to not be vulnerable.
but safety has begun to suffocate me.

i want to be free.
i want to fly.

i want to be vulnerable.
